FOR ALL THINGS FOLIAGE

Fall in love with Vermont.

FOLIAGE REPORT

Current Foliage Report | Week of September 30

This week, we welcome the start of October. On schedule, parts of the state are beginning to reach peak foliage, particularly the northernmost and southwest corners of the state and the areas of highest elevation.

Throughout the rest of the state, color is filling in nicely. After a slight slowdown with a warm week in the latter half of September, the past couple days have seen a nice progression of saturation which will continue this week. If you’d like to thank any trees in particular, it would be maples, sugar maples, and (within the past week) oak and some aspen species as well.

From mountain summits, especially Vermont’s highest peaks, Mt. Mansfield and Camel’s Hump, the views are always a treat. Right now, you can get expansive views of the state with orange, yellow, and some glimpses of red. Pops of color can be seen along the 45 min – 1 hr drives as elevation increases. Some of our favorite smaller foliage hikes are Bolton fire tower, Mt. Philo, and Nebraska Notch.

Burlington remains quite green, as the city is usually the last of the state to reach peak.

Where the current best foliage can be seen:

  • Roads that run along ridges with views of mountains/hillsides
    • Route 100, Route 7, Route 14
    • “gap” roads: Lincoln Gap, Appalachian Gap, Middlebury Gap
  • Southwest corner of Vermont near Bennington
  • In the north, Route 105 from Jay east towards New Hampshire
  • In the south, Route 9, including the Molly Stark Scenic Byway, especially near Woodford State Park/Adams Reservoir.
