FOR ALL THINGS FOLIAGE

Fall in love with Vermont.

FOLIAGE REPORT

Current Foliage Report | Week of October 21

Colors can be seen across the state, even in places that are past peak. All areas of Vermont currently have views yellow and orange foliage offering beautiful viewing while driving through the hills, though leaves in the higher elevations have come and gone.

But Burlington is surely the place to be this week. Leaves along the waterfront and throughout downtown are vibrant and beginning to fall, covering the ground in a layer of color. We love wandering around the city with so much color. Some of our favorites things to do can be found here.

Outside of the city, we welcome “snowliage”: foliage colors at the base of the mountain fading into snowy peaks. A few ambitious skiers brought out their gear and were able to hike up and take a few bumpy turns on mountain tops last week. After the few warm days that followed the flakes, prepare well for hikes– you’ll surely encounter either snow or mud.

What’s happening? Trees prepare for winter by shutting down photosynthesis and degrading chlorophyll in their leaves to reveal the colors we now see on the landscape. One of the last steps in preparing for winter is the shedding of leaves so that the trees can stay dormant during the cold winter months. Over the next few weeks, we can expect to see leaf drop occurring in the higher and colder locations, gradually progressing through the mid-elevations and into the valleys.
