MORE ABOUT THE ISLAND LINE TOUR
Tours depart from the Hotel Vermont Lobby. We’ll start with a brief welcome meeting, safety talk and bike fitting. Our ride will take us along Lake Champlain on the Island Line Trail, an easy, paved, rail trail.
We’ll cross the Lamoille River and join the Colchester Bike Path on our way to the Colchester Causeway which is surrounded by Mallets Bay and the Green Mountains to the East and broad open lake and Adirondack Mountains to the West. The views are stunning. The Causeway is crushed gravel and our hybrid bikes are made to handle this surface nicely. At the 10 mile mark we reach “The Cut” where the old rail bridge once stood and now allows sail boats to pass from Mallet’s Bay to the broad lake. On weekends in the fall (Fri, Sat & Sun), A bicycle ferry boat operates and shuttles cyclists to the other side of the cut where we may continue onto South Hero, the southern most island in the Champlain Island Chain.
Half day adventures will turn around at “The Cut” and return along the path, back to Burlington, enjoying the views to the south. Full day tours may continue onto the Islands where we will enjoy a loop on the west shore of South Hero Island and visit Hackett’s Apple Orchard for delicious apples and fresh cider doughnuts. The northern terminus of our ride is Snow Farm Vineyard & Winery where you may taste and purchase some of their locally produced, award winning wines.
